Reyes Wins PBA Battle at Black Oak Casino
TUOLUMNE, CA (June 15, 2006)- The Professional Bowlers
Association (PBA) stormed into Black Oak Casino's bowling
center last weekend in the first ever professional bowling
tournament held in Tuolumne County. Tony Reyes, a nationally
ranked touring pro came away the victor over a field of
63 bowlers. Reyes, from San Bruno , California , had a perfect
7-0 record in match play defeating Frank Barefoot, Jr. of
Upland , California in the final match.
The weekend got of to a rousing start with a Pro-Am event
on Friday night that paired prominent professionals with
local amateurs in a "no-tap" format. The amateurs
who came away with the top prizes were Ken Brown, Mike Silva
and Jim Bell. In addition to cash prizes, these amateurs
also walked away with a limited edition Black Oak Casino
bowling ball.
The next day the pros took to the lanes for an eight game
qualifying round with the top 21 bowlers advancing to the
semi-finals on Sunday. These players, each guaranteed at
least $400, bowled another 5 games to select the top 16
for match game play. The round of 16 involved a best of
5 game format with the top 8 players advancing to the next
round for a best of 3 game format. These bowlers then cut
to the top 4 players bowling one game match to select the
final two for the finals: Frank Barefoot Jr. and Tony Reyes.
Reyes took home a total of $2,000 for his efforts.
The tournament featured nationally recognized touring professionals,
including Reyes, Michael Haugen, Jr., and P.J. Haggerty.
Players came from as far away as Arizona , Nevada , Washington
, and one even came from Japan . The tournament also included
several local bowlers who wanted to test their game against
the best professionals on the West Coast.
